Plans For Dinner And Dance For School Alumni At The End Of The Year
Mrs. Menon, as the school year is coming to an end, the School Alumni and I, have suggested a series of ideas for the upcoming Dinner and Dance. It has been a long time since the last gathering of our school’s Alumni members. It will be a meaningful and joyous event for all to come back and rekindle old friendships. I sincerely extend our invitation to invite you and the school staff members to attend this occasion with us. We have collated all our suggestions of possible themes for that night and we have all agreed on “Masquerade” theme. However, we would like to seek your opinion.

What is the theme ‘Masquerade’? Basically, guests come for the dinner wearing a mask. Masked guests are dressed so as not to be identified. This would serve as a fun and exciting way to mingle around which would be suitable for the objective of the dinner and dance, to provide opportunities for past pupils to gather and network. Furthermore, the alumni members have not met for a long period of time and it would be pretty awkward for all to sit together looking at each other face-to-face and therefore, the mask serve its purpose. Comparing the other two possible themes, the ‘Retro Disco’ theme would not be pleasant for the older school staff members as they make up the majority of our audience that night as it involves loud thumping music. Whereas, the ‘Hollywood Night’ theme would be too dull for such a meaningful event as its main attraction would only be its red carpet.

We have also gathered our suggestions for the possible activities and short-listed a few. Firstly, we have put in an auction to bid on items which the school staff or the alumni members could donate and then bring them back as souvenirs. This also serves the objective of raising funds for needy pupils of our school. Secondly, guests can start dancing in the ballroom after dinner which would last for one hour. This will give the opportunity for guests to showcase their dancing talents. Lastly, we would end-off with a ‘best-dressed hunk and babe’ award presentation for the best-dressed male and female for the night.

We have come out with a programme and would like to seek your opinion. The guests would be seated in the ball room by 7.30pm as the principal and distinguished guests would each give their opening speeches. Dinner would then start at 7.45pm together with the auction and will end before 8.45pm. Ball dancing would then commence at 9pm and eventually end with prize presentation at 10.00pm. Also, we have decided to host this event at the Hard Rock Hotel and each attending guest is required to pay a sum of $20 per person.

To end off, the organizing committee of the school alumni looks forward to your suggestions and the presence of you and your staff as this event would serve as a way for the school alumni of thanking all of you for bringing our school to greater heights all these years.

The rediscovery of the Shang began with the discovery of strange inscriptions that resembling Chinese on turtle plastrons. Wang Yirong, an expert in ancient Chinese texts, sent his pharmacist for turtle plastron for his sick family member. Unknowingly, one of the members discovered inscriptions on them before they were sent for grounding. These bones speak of tragedy and childbirth of nobles to the communal. Descriptions of sacrifices, both human and animal, signs of natural forces, brief statements and alliances with foreign tribes are inscribed on. David N Keightley explained that diviners would use the bones to predict an event. Materials are cleaned, thinned and by drilling notches at its back. Then applying a hot object, the surface would crack representing a voice from another world. The king would then interpret the crack carving it onto the object, with an original divination statement. The oracle bones also refer to persons who appeared in traditional historical texts, proving ancient myths.

Reality television, dominating the tube right now, is about the real antics of real people. Parading across a celebrity-driven medium, these shows feature people getting insulted humbled and humiliated. Money is behind the boom of reality shows as these shows have high ratings, but low costs. Furthermore, reality shows also shows people exposing something and embarrassment or disappointment as networks gain money putting on these shows, which people like to watch. These shows erase the boundaries between the public and the private keeping people up with society. They also gain on getting people curistory and giving people surprise in the allotted time slot. Shows include dating and courtship and giving people the universal experience however, they are manifestly unreal and are unscripted drama. As time goes on, producers add more bells and whistles and gimmicks, eventually going completely over the top, turning off both viewers and advertisers.

International Friendship Day - Our World

Being a good ambassador of Singapore is not difficult.I should be open to cultural diversity all around the world and be able to understand it. I must also strive to promote Singapore's national interests and always portrait their best image as Singaporeans whenever i am overseas. Besides that, being an ambassador, I must work hard and contribute to the society and if i have the chance to work overseas in the future, I would learn from them and bring the knowledge back to Singapore and implement on our our country thus improving Singapore.

Countries form alliances to protect its own national interest, both military and economically. Singapore is small against countries such like the USA,USSR and Japan. Therefore, it is much at a disadvantage in an event of a war. Alliances help Singapore as if it was to be involved in a world, its alliances would back her up and help her. Alliances also help to promote peace as if there were conflicts between countries, peace can be negotiate instead of moving into war. Some alliances including Singapore are, ASEAN and the UN.

Fostering close ties with other countries benefited Singapore much over the years. Fostering ties can help to deal with international problems under one domain. Countries sit down together for conferences and meetings to discuss what can be done to improve these situation. Some examples would be like human and drug trafficking and nabbing of illegal or criminal immigrants. Furthermore, Singapore can also help to improve the environment through environmental talks and seminars.

Some of the things which untie nations together would be trade and common interest. One example would be the Olympics games which not only benefit the hosting country, but also the neighbouring countries. The games boost the tourism rate as ambassadors from all the other parts of the world would come down and support for their own countries. Besides that, uniting nations together would form a common market and thus boosting the world economy going up. The respective countries benefit as the other parts of the world would demand for its goods.

Reflection on Total Defence Day

During our total defence day and Chinese new year celebrations, we learned about the five aspects of total defence. Military, Civil, Economic, Social and Psychological Defence. Booths were put up by the different uniform groups in my school, consisting the national police cadet corps, national cadet corps and red cross youth. Life saving skills were thought and drill performance were put up and i enjoyed it alot. Furthermore, the awareness of the NE messages in ensuring the continuance of our nation was further emphasises. The messages include,

We treasure our heritage and take pride in shaping our own unique way of life. Through our Chinese new year celebrations Indian Dances, singing of chinese new year songs and exchanging greeting from Malay friends, we learned that Singapore is our homeland; this is where we belong.

We must also preserve racial and religious harmony. For instance, the different races celebrating together for Chinese new year..We must also ourselves defend Singapore.

We should be proud to defend Singapore ourselves, as no one else is responsible for our security and well-being. Through booths by our uniform gorup /NE trail- Life saving skills by red cross , Drill performances by our NCC)

Through these programmes, i have learn alot and have more confidence in our nation and our future.

Summary.

Current approaches to environmentalism do not work because America carbon emissions are increasing as countries are not committed to the Kyoto Protocol, which the world decrease the world’s carbon emissions as one. Nations had problems reaching their reducing targets as using the old paradigm of judging everything on economic growth people believed that environmentalism could resolve worst effects, and economic growth is made easier. Moreover, economic growth is dependent use of fossil fuels like, coal and oil and spurring it cheaply is by burning more fossil fuel thus threatening our civilization. Research has also conceded that carbon dioxide is the major environmental contaminant as no indication of improvement to decrease it as living standards rise. Today, we question ourselves whether our actions pour more carbon into the atmosphere. From furnace, air-conditioner or car-dependent folks, we would need to consider smaller homes, use the bus, or a bike for daily transportation.

Write about an occasion when you just could not stop laughing at an inappropriate moment.

That piece of melodious music reached its climax as everyone in the hall was swaying to its tune. She was brilliant, her blonde hair and her beautiful blue eyes. Her powerful voice stunned the entire audience crowd as I closed my eyes and dream myself right beside her. All the attention was on her. Just then, my laughter crackled through the concert hall as each and everyone turned their heads and look upon me.

“Wow, finally I’m here, hope I’ll enjoy your concert.”, I said.

I was attending a concert at the Esplanade concert hall of my primary school friend, Liwen. After knowing her for 7 years, she had finally made her mark today in being the lead singer tonight for her secondary school concert as I could hear her heels tapping nervously while she was standing beside me. Her thick makeup and her natural curls on her hair made her irresistibly attractive. All the limelight was on her tonight.

“Do I look alright?” she asked unconfidently.

Assuring her that she look perfectly fine as I recalling back 3 years ago when me and Liwen clinched the 1st price in our school singing competition. From then, she had left a deep etch on my mind as her stunning voice has always made her the center of attraction amongst the boys. “Have I fallen for her?” I thought to myself sneakily, smiling to myself as I settled myself in the hall waiting for the concert to begin.

Finally, the lights when off in the concert hall as a beam of spotlight was set on the middle of the concert hall. Taking her time walking towards the audience, Liwen’s voice melted my heart as everyone applauded and jeered as the dimmed light slowly light up and the dance troupe was dancing behind her. Enjoying her singing, I closed my eyes as images from my childhood ran through my mind as if it was yesterday. Song after song, everything was perfect as Liwen manage to keep her stand on stage. I clapped and jeered alongside with the people sitting by my right and left.

Then it came, “Edelweiss”, our favourite childhood song. Just when I thought all when well, trouble came for me. The chorus of the song was relatively high for any singer and I could see Liwen on stage trying all her might to reach that note. Just then, the bulky guy in his forties sitting beside me let out a loud and uncommon sound when Liwen reached the highest note in the song.

“I couldn’t control it further!” I thought to myself. Due to my high pitch, my voice was easily noticeable as it channeled through the entire concert hall. Uncontrollably, my laughter busted out.

“He had just fart!”, I giggled loudly.

I could not resist my laughter by then as I continued on. All the attention on me now as I could see someone from across the concert laughing together at my remark. However, knowing the dire consequences of spoiling Liwen’s performance, I was laughing till the extent of falling of my chair. His face was blushing red now as half the hall knew that he had just farted as he took the brochure for the concert covered his face and took his heavy footsteps out of the concert hall with his head held down.

“What in the world have I just done? I could have just controlled my laughter. I’ve just embarrassed someone in front of so many people. What was I suppose to do now?” I thought to myself guiltily. My laughter slowly subsides as I thought back on what I have just done.

Just when all the buzzing has reached its peak, Liwen continued on the song as she subside the crowd with her voice trying to bring back the crowd with her voice. Captivated by her voice, the silence gradually came back as she ended the beautiful piece with a elegant bow. Walking out of the concert hall after the entire performance, I met Liwen for supper as we both took a stroll along Singapore River. Walking, I complimented on her brilliant performance just now and her brilliant job she did holding down the crowd after such a commotion just now.

“What was I thinking just now? Was I a little too much just now? How will you feel if you were that guy?” , I asked.

With a grin on her face, she replied, “You will never know.”
